Open Work Permit

An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific.

Because it is not job-specific, the applicant will not need the following when they apply for their work permit:

• A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada; or
• Proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee.

Who can apply for an open work permit?

The applicant may be eligible for an open work permit if they are in one of the following situations:

• Permanent residence applicants who have applied to an office in Canada,
• Dependent family members of some permanent residence applicants,
• Spouses and common-law partners of some workers and international students
• Refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons and their family members,
• Some temporary resident permit holders, or
• Some young workers participating in special programs.

In each of these situations, the applicant must meet additional criteria to be eligible.

Post-Graduate Work Permits

Graduates of Canadian academic programs of at least eight months in duration can move from a Canada study permit to a post-graduate open work permit. Canada will issue the work permit for the same period of validity as the previous study permit. For more information on this type of open work permit, click here
